Choosing the Right Size and Shape for Your Breast Implant
Cosmetic surgery is growing worldwide, and 87% of plastic surgery is performed on women. The most popular among plastic surgery procedures by far is breast implants. One of the biggest concerns for our breast implant patients is the shape of the breast after the implant is given. Implants can either be round or teardrop shaped. How do you choose the implant size and shape that's just right for you?
The most important thing is to create a breast that looks both beautiful and natural. At The Plastic Surgery Institute, every patient gets the implant that's been determined to be right for them. How do we decide which implant is right for each patient?
When to Use a Teardrop Shaped Breast Implant
First, as mentioned, breast implants can be either round or teardrop shaped. The teardrop implant is very useful for patients who have droopiness or if they had a constricted lower pole. A constricted lower pole is a tightness in the bottom part of the breast because the teardrop implant is more full at the bottom than it is at the top. The teardrop implant will naturally stretch out a tight lower pole. If a patient has a constricted lower pole or a tuberous breast deformity, the teardrop breast implant can be perfect for them.
What if I Have a Normal Breast?
Plastic surgeons used to think that a teardrop breast implant looked more natural than a round breast implant. However, if your breast shape is normal, two new studies out of Europe have shown that people can't tell the difference between the two implants. In these studies, photos of women with both teardrop implants and round implants were shown to both plastic surgeons and patients, and none of the people viewing the photos could tell the difference from women with teardrop implants to women with round implants. Why does this matter?
In a normal looking and normal sized breast, round and teardrop implants look the same. When possible, round implants should be given for the sole reason that round implants have a lower complication rate than teardrop implants.
